But what is it used for? Do you store needles inside??

Haven't got one myself but I think they are used as

a pin/needle cushion, or
for rolling WIPs round, or
for storing lace/braid wound round it (this would seem a waste of stitching though if you can't ever see it for stuff wound around it.

I think it's just a glorified pincushion :D
very nice design, too bad it's meant only for those specialty threads. there's another site with a freebie, let me see if I can remember where it is, and I'll post it later.
