Sounds like it's going great though it's a shame you lost one member. You could always say to your existing class that new people are more than welcome to sign up for the continuation classes if they know of anyone that might be interested so as to boost you back up again.

Re: stitching course

Post by Mabel Figworthy »

Had some stitching time this Sunday so decided to do a bit of model stitching :-).

I found that the material pack for the second course would be relatively expensive (about £6.50, and even then I have to donate bits of my own stuff), but that's partly because of a few finishes.

So I thought I'd make up those finishes for them to see, then let them choose whether they want the more expensive material pack with the nice finishes, or the less expensive one and they'll end up with just the stitching, for them to finish as they see fit.

One of the finishes is a cupcake pincushion -- I stitched this one free-hand but I'll make a chart for them of course. It uses a self-cover button covered with dark red felt (this one is too big really, but it's the only size I had in my stash -- theirs would be about 2/3 the size), 28ct evenweave in a cakey colour :-), bullion knots and theirs will use sating thread for the icing. The whole mounted in a silicone cupcake mould:

I'm still working on an aida band sachet with pulled work. Did the hemming and some small bands yesterday, then the entire centre motif for the front of the bag, only to realise after finishing it that I'd stitched it on the reverse side of the fabric    . I managed not to say any bad words...

Just caught up with this tread and enjoying it. Great variety and good examples of what can be made. Hope the ladies will tell their friends and would want to continue next year.

Finished the sachet  ! I used Thredfairy red silk cord for the pulled work and sewing up the sides, and the lining is just some left-over cotton I made into a little bag. I slipstitched the lining to the back of the stitches which created the holes that the ribbon goes through (sounds more complicated than it is :-)), then used running stitch to sew up the sides of the aida band.

My sachet is filled with cloves, but they can choose whatever filling they like of course. Also, mine is red and gold, theirs will be white aida band with a gold edging (a little wider than this), and the lining will be a lime green linen.

Tomorrow I'm taking this, the cupcake, a biscornu I made earlier and a piece of hardanger, plus a picture of the tall black cat I designed some time ago, to show them what projects the second course will consist of -- that should tempt them to sign up on the spot :-)!

(the first picture is a bit fuzzy, not sure what went wrong)

Unfortunately the class probably won't go ahead -- I only had seven ladies left, and two of them cannot continue because of other commitments (one signed up for this course exactly because it was only half a term, and the other had her shift changed to Wednesday). That left only five, meaning it isn't feasible :-( .

They all really liked the projects for the next course, and we've agreed they will all see if they can find friends who'd like to come -- next week we'll have a "mop up" meeting where I am there for two hours and they can drop in with the projects they've been working on for those last bits of finishing and advice, and they'll let me know if they've been successful. If they have, we can start after half-term. So fingers crossed!
