Japanese embroidery

Post by megandmog »

Anyone do it?

I did a short workshop at the show in Harrogate at the weekend and am now hooked!

Anyone got any recommendations for finding out more about the techniques, buying equipment etc?

I saw a demo at the show I went to and decided it was something I'd love to do when I have the time and brain power to attend to it. (See also: learning to use a sewing machine, patchwork and quilting, woodturning - all hobbies I'd like to try at some point)

The lady talked about using silk, stitching onto silk and keeping everything very taut. There must be some books on it I would have thought?

I wanted to do that workshop at Ally Pally but was too late, they were booked up :-(. I do have some of the Japanese flat silks that are used for it though (they are gorgeous  ), and have been reading several books about it, so one day I will get round to it!

Was the tutor Midori Matsushima? She offers workshops on her website so if there's anything near you you might do something like that. Some of the same techniques are used by Helen M Stevens (her books are incredible!) and you can read about her classes here

Yes it was Midori who ran the class. She's absolutely lovely. Going to attend her weekend course at Burton Manor in January - so excited!
