Shauns Birthday Cake

Post by Lisa »

Image

My little boy is 2 on Thursday and I have just this second finished his cake. Some of you may have already seen is on facebook.

he has a maderia sponge cake with apricot jam and buttercream filling. The icing was a pain in the rear end as I had to colour all of it :x so they red wanted to stay pink and the black wanted to be grey :x I got the icing reduced at work as the cardboard flap had been opened (still in a sealed vacuum pack inside) so they reduced it from £2.99 to 50p . the BBE on it wasnt till 2010. However, I will not be buying it again, it kept sticking and was generally a PITA.

But I am pleased with the result. Havent showed it Shaun yet, as he went to bed before i did all the black but will show him in the morning :D

Brilliant cake!!

Your comment about the black wanting to stay grey made me laugh: my SIL wanted to do the same thing (colour white icing black) and had the same problem. I think she pretty much cleared Tesco out of black food colouring trying to get it inky black.

You've done a fabulous job. I hope Shaun has a lovely birthday.

I haven't colored much fondant, but there are a few tricks to get the deeper colors with buttercream icing that would probably work with fondant, too. When you're trying to get a red, start with a pink coloring and go as dark as you can. Using a lot of red coloring can sometimes make the icing bitter, so if you start with a dark pink and then add red, it helps. When you get it to a very, very dark pink/medium red, let it sit because it should darken as it sits. The same goes with black--color it to a dark grey and then let it sit and hopefully it will darken to a black. Red and black are the two worst colors to do!
