Definitely worth a try Mabel. It will be interesting to see it in the 'right' colours too. So glad you are enjoying a change of craft, it is good for us to diversify from time to time.

Definitely worth trying!
The ideas that you come up with constantly amaze me! Is there any end to your talents I wonder?

Well, I've tried them out in the right colours - oh boy have I tried them out :-)!

You see, every December our Embroidery Circle goes out for a Christmas lunch, and we usually exchange Christmas cards. Wouldn't it be nice, I thought, to take a little ornament for everyone? And wouldn't this little wreath be just the thing? After all, I'd only need eleven.

That was yesterday late afternoon. The Christmas lunch was today. (and very nice it was too)

So last night after dinner (8pm) I set out to crochet eleven wreath bases; I used the two greens I ordered not too long ago, a soft 4-ply:

Then this morning I set out to decorate them with red running stitch and beads. This would have been a lot quicker if I had decided on one simple decoration and done them all like that, but I thought it would be much nicer if they were all different, so had a rummage through my stash and here they are, all different (even if only a little in some cases):

Not all the bling shows up very well, so here is one with star sequins shown at an angle:

Anyway, they were much appreciated :-D

Two more (I'd done one too few for the Embroidery Group, and we're meeting a needleworking friend for Christmas dinner tonight who I thought might also appreciate one) - with pearl beads this time:

I tried something different, possible because I got some size 6 beads - here is a wreath with the beads crocheted in, instead of attached later. They are in a slightly different place, but I think it works rather well!

Oh I love this mini rose, it is very pretty. The other 2 wreaths are also lovely with pearls & gold beads. You are going great guns with these Mabel. As well as a speedy needle for sewing you've also got a speedy crochet hook. Look forward to next lot you make :) :applesauce: :applesauce:

There are so many clever and kind people on the internet offering us all these lovely freebies that it's a shame I haven't more stitching time :-)!

I also do a bit of crochet. I recently found a pattern using a Q hook. I have never used a hook that big but now that I have mastered it I don't think I will every go back to a J hook ! I have been making baby blankets for charity using the large hook and chunky yarn. They turn out so quickly and are very warm and thick.

I had to look up US crochet hook sizes to work that one out - 16mm it says. I think the largest I've worked with was 12mm (somewhere between an N and a P, apparently - logically that would be an O but it didn't say that existed) and like you I was pleasantly surprised at how quick everything was :-)!

How about doing it in white with a yellow centre, like a Christmas Rose...would that work?

It might, but it would be a bit fiddly as you would have to change colour mid-row; on the other hand I think you could get away with a colour change only in the last of the rows as that would be what mainly shows.

The rose is worked by starting with a chain, then working "chain stitch arches" in those chains, skipping some, then working scallops/shell shapes in the arches; and you start rolling from the opposite end to where you finish. So in theory if you start the thing in yellow, do the chain and the arches in yellow and the first two scallops (out of seven in total), then change to white, I suppose that would work. Might even give it a try, I've got a left-over bit of yellow somewhere!
