It's been a good year for the Roses, now with Butterflies

Post by Garnet »

Here are some Roses I made earlier this year, well, what is left of them anyway, after I have given lots away to friends. They all have safety pins on the back to wear as brooches.

and some black ones I have made for Goth friends, they were hard to photograph to get the detail, I lost count of how many shots I took, at a distance they just looked like black circles on green leaves, this is the best shot.

Love those roses. Have you thought of doing poppies for Rememberace Sunday. It's 100 years since the guns went quiet.

If you do some I would be proud to own one. My Grandad fought and survived WW1 but never spoke of it.

Wendy, I have made a Poppy as I hated disposing of the paper ones, I still always put as much as I can in the collection tins in November. It is a subject close to my heart too, my Grandfather was in WW1 too and was gassed at Mons, he was invalided home but was never the same again, sadly he died before I knew him, but I know what a struggle it was for him from my Nanna.

In the meantime here is a Flutter of Butterflies to go with the Roses

A lovely bunch of roses to brighten this freezing morning, and then gorgeous butterflies too. Thanks for brightening this oh so chilly morning.

At 6.30am this morning it was 3.8c - I have never seen it so low. This is supposed to be the 'winterless north' - guess it got lost somewhere.

By the way, could you tell me where you found the pattern for the rose-and-leaves? I'd love to make a few!
What size are they, and what size yarn did you use?

Thank you Lovelies for the replies, they do mean ever such a lot to me.

Mabel, the butterflies are so quick and easy to do aren't they and I love the 3D way they become butterflies when the circle is folded, the instructions can be found here

http://www.bellacoco.co.uk/2015/08/croc ... ttern.html" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank

The Roses are lovely and very simple to do, they are on a foundation row and it gets rolled around itself when the crochet is complete. The lovely lady Lucy explains it much better than I can and I wish I knew how to follow her on the blog/computer thingy, anyway, by coincedence she has been doing some butterflies too. This should take you to her site:

http://attic24.typepad.com/" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank

The Roses I made from her site are further down the page under patterns & tutorials and they are her May Roses.

A word of warning though, you may find yourself losing hours there, it's a veritable rabbit-hole (if you can have a rabbit-hole in an attic  )

I just had a play with whatever double knitting wool I had left over from making the Granny Square blanket and I think I used either a 3.5 or 4mm hook, as you know yarns can vary in thicknesses even within the same brand depending on the dyeing process.

Next time I make some of the Roses I am going to experiment with 4 ply and a smaller hook.

Hope this helps.

Edited to add:

The Roses are approx. 1 3/4 - 2 inches depending on the Wool and depending where you place the leaves, in all mine measure 3 inches. Again I hope this helps

Thanks! Yes, that's where I found the butterflies, Bella Coco. I think I got some rose patterns from there as well. Will go and browse the other site now!
