Susan's Punch Needle WIP
A while ago someone here introduced me to punch needle and I immediately rushed out and bought a kit. Here's how I've been getting on with it.
And here is the latest. It really is a nice craft to do, but different from cross-stitch - not quite so addictive, but much faster to see any progress. Unfortunately you don't really get the full effect from a photo as it's very textured - when you see it you just have to touch it.
One thing to know if you try this is that you really do need to use a hoop - qsnaps just don't keep the tension needed at all.

Lovely design and it certainly does look very tactile! And it's always nice to do something different in between, especially if it's both quick and pretty!

Re: Susan's Punch Needle WIP
It's lovely and I have to admit an urge to touch it. It's that kind of 'material' isn't it.
Would you do more now you've tried one?

That is really a neat picture and it does ask to be touched. Very pretty.

Re: Susan's Punch Needle WIP
Somewhere in the depths of my storage system (that is a laugh in itself) I have a punch needle set that I bought as a change of craft rather than anything else. When I packed to move here I did think about giving it to my grand-daughter but this thread has made me grateful that I did not as I could do with some textured pieces on the walls in the stairs.
Can I use any picture or does it have to be a certain type?

Yes definitely, it's something I'd like to experiment with more. It's not quite so satisfying to do as cross stitch, possibly because of the nature of it, the detail is not there as it is in cross stitch. But I do love the finished look and the texture element is wonderful. There doesn't seem to be a very big range of kits and charts for punch needle available though, so finding one that I like for my next project might take a while.~threadbear~ wrote:It's lovely and I have to admit an urge to touch it. Typical, having just said that I've found a site with a huge selection of punch needle charts. It's at Happy Hobbits.SusanF wrote: There doesn't seem to be a very big range of kits and charts for punch needle available though, so finding one that I like for my next project might take a while.
Rosemary, I'm not sure what you mean by 'Can I use any picture?'

As I have not done anything with my Punch Needle kit at all I was wondering whether it has to be done with specific pictures or whether a favourite cross stitch pattern or glass painting pattern could be used.

Re: Susan's Punch Needle WIP
I would think that you could adapt a picture. The only thing to keep in mind is not to get too much detail in it. Something that would look okay with larger blocks of the same color would probably work.RosemaryH wrote:As I have not done anything with my Punch Needle kit at all I was wondering whether it has to be done with specific pictures or whether a favourite cross stitch pattern or glass painting pattern could be used.

It's interesting to see that the punch needle is coming back. Granted, I'm only 30, but my mom and I did a couple of these when I was in elementary school. I think she still has some of the kits. They're probably what actually turned me onto xs--wanted a similar look with more detail.
I really like the design you're doing, Susan.
Re: Susan's Punch Needle WIP
Oh I see what you mean Rosemary - I'm just a bit slow at times
The charts for punch needle look a bit like painting by numbers charts. They are printed onto the back of the fabric and you work from the back punching into the fabric. It's probaly easiest to buy a kit first (you don't get the punch needle with a kit) and try it out. Once you get used to it you can start experimenting with your own designs. I've been thinking that someday I would try printing a design onto a piece of t-shirt transfer paper and then transferring it onto the fabric that way.

Re: Susan's Punch Needle WIP
Thank you both, Sounds like I could copy out something from my glass painting book as there are less details and larger areas of colours. So I guess one day soon I will have to go through my stash and find all of the stuff I bought. I did not even look at it closely when I bought it because I knew that the pictures that were provided were not what I wanted to do and then did not bother to look deeper. Thanks for the encouragement.

Re: Susan's Punch Needle WIP
Very nice! I love punch needle too! I made a tiny Panda for my first project, and it was so easy I ran out and bought two stocking kits for the kids for Christmas. Then I let my creativity run amuck and tried to do it on a sweatshirt. It didn't work. But it's still fun, nice break from the usual projects.

What fabric should be used for punch needle?
