ooh that's great, to have a job where you can also sit and stitch.
Which castle are you going for first Daz?

Yep, being paid to stitch, can't be bad can it??
Cardiff Castle and Castell Coch are on the short list, mainly because they're both local, but I'm still undecided which to do first.
I've measured the material, marked the centre and loaded it into the scroll frame etc but the final decision will be when I get a chance to look thru both patterns more closely.
I'm planning to make a start on one of them later tonight.

So exciting when you first start on a new project isn't it.
Castell Coch looks nice with the turrets ... Be great though, to do a local attraction that others can recognise later when they look at your work.
Am looking forward to seeing which you end up choosing though.

The important thing is to work on the fabric you like -- I hate it when people pretend one fabric is somehow 'better' than another, as if you have to work on linen all the time to be a 'good' cross stitcher.Rose wrote:I love my aida fabric and I am so glad to have others that are of a like mind.
Can I add an additional gripe? I love my mother-in-law to bits and she greatly appreciates the cards I make and the miniature picture I did for her dolls house, but she does tend to have the attitude that 'cross stitch isn't real embroidery you know'; I think she feels it's less creative because you just 'follow a pattern'. But even if you don't make your own designs (and many of us do -- take a bow Agi and threadbear among others), judging by what I read here and what I do myself, we're continually making creative choices about colour, count and type of fabric, which threads, using beads or metallics etc.
What do you mean, not creaive?!?
I have come across the aida is for beginners attitude alot over the years. That if you don't get into eavenweaves or linen then you aren't really doing it right. I think that was one reason for getting off some other sites the attitude of some of the members when you asked about aida was a bit derogatory.
I think that we have all come across that person that says well all you are doing is making a copy. Have they ever tried to make that copy. Well it looks pretty real to me.
Smile and nod you are not going to change their minds and there are plenty of people who appreciate what we are able to create.

Reading that, I'm so glad I was lucky enough to join this forum, where you can just be yourself and no matter what your project/fabric, you get loads of support and encouragement.
It's so sad and unnecessary when people try to bring others down.

...and just a mini update - I decided to do Castell Coch first, so I've uploaded a closeup of the pic on the front of the pattern book
...and a small pic of about an hours worth of stitching done so far. It doesn't look like much but there's 5 or 6 colour in there already

That is going to be lovely Daz.
Those greens are going to build up to look so effective.
Well done.

The strange thing is that one of the original reasons for taking on these smaller projects was to have a break from doing lots of confetti stitches in my Leopardess work hahaRose wrote:Ah leaves in the trees. I can sympathies I am doing confetti stitches in leaves right now myself.

Me 2 - you are soooo lucky! ...and don't know about everyone else but where DO the hours go when your stitching? Its like its all on fast-forward. You say to yourself 'i'll just do this little bit' and before you know it 2 hours have passed
Also getting back to what you guys were saying about 'just following a pattern'. My dad is of that opinion to and says 'well any one can do it'. Can I just say i'd like him to try ! Not everyone has the patience, perserverance and commitment to do cross stitch and I think you have to be creative to what to do something like that.
From tiny patterns to huge ones, I think everyone should be shown the recognition they deserve!
So this is me saying 'your ALL fab'!

Thankfully my other half loves the creativity and visual appeal of cross stitch, but admits that she doesn't have what it takes to persevere with one, so she's very supportive...... as is everyone on this forum
