fccs’s Angel of Love - July 2021
So....I can’t find my original thread for this one, either, so here we go.
I haven’t made much progress but as of a few days ago she has hands and part of a sleeve.

This looks like a very interesting design and that along with the very different colours is making a really beautiful and interesting embroidery. I am definitely looking forward to the next update.

Re: fccs’s Angel of Love - June 2021
It’s been a long time since I’ve touched this one, but today I decided to give her some attention. (She’s been living in a pillowcase in my closet, poor thing.) I did the dark blue of her cape and I started her right (our left) sleeve.
I had her on stretcher bars originally, but the Jobelan fabric is so soft that i just couldn’t get a nice stretch on it. I had some PVC and elbows, so I cut the PVC to lengths I needed and made my own frame. I’m using the clamps from a couple QSnaps I had on hand. It’s much better than the stretcher bars, but now the issue I’m facing is reaching the top half of the design. The long sides of the frame are about 18.5” and it’s not easy to reach the upper parts, especially having to go around the 11.5” width of the frame. I really would prefer to work on the PVC frame because I can see the entire design area. I thought about using a scroll frame but she has a ton of beads and I’ve never used a scroll frame with beads. The benefit of using a scroll frame is I would be reaching under the frame to stitch, rather than around like I have to with the PVC frame. (That makes sense, right?) Feel free to give me ideas on how to handle the long frame, or how to use a scroll frame with beads.
Oh, and in case you don’t know what the finished design is, here you go:

She's quite a gal! Glad she has been rescued from her pillow case.
Are the beads added as you go? If that is not essential, you could have her on a scroll frame and then add the beads right at the end.
Or turn the frame. When I worked with the large slate frame (and even the small one) I would occasionally turn the work upside down (not back to front, I mean, but top to bottom) if I couldn't reach. As it's a 180 degree turn the crosses would still go in the same direction so that wouldn't be a problem.

Re: fccs’s Angel of Love - June 2021
One of the most beautiful angel designs I've seen. I stitched an "angel afghan" motif years ago and if I had seen that design she would have been smack dab in the middle! Would Mabel's suggestion about saving the beading for last make sense? Otherwise it seems like the stitching will become more burdensome as you make progress. I am so glad that you have freed her from the pillowcase. I had to whisper that since some of my waiting patiently UFO's may be listening and are wanting freedom from incarceration too.

Re: fccs’s Angel of Love - June 2021
I’ve thought about turning the frame and might have to do that. I did that with another design I did, and it worked fine, but that was a geometric design so it didn’t puzzle my head as much as this one might. I also thought about leaving the beads until the end but there are SO MANDY BEADS I’m afraid to leave them all to last. You can see how many beads there are in just the small area I’ve finished. I wonder if I could use a scroll frame with the beads, maybe putting a piece of fabric over them to provide cushioning? I like both your ideas.Mabel Figworthy wrote: ↑Wed Jun 23, 2021 9:35 am

Both of Mabel’s ideas are spot on, as usual. And I’m laughing at your whisper.rcperryls wrote: ↑Wed Jun 23, 2021 2:21 pm Would Mabel's suggestion about saving the beading for last make sense? I got some stitches in before work this morning. Turning the frame and the chart upside down makes it much easier and so far my head isn’t confused.

I'm not sure how you are choosing which of your two magnificent projects to work on at any time. Every stitch is progress and you are making good progress on this one too. Glad you found a way to work on it that is not confusing!

As long as you remember to turn the chart Upside down you should be fine!
I love the detail on the 'skirt' of this!

Re: fccs’s Angel of Love - June 2021
Here’s my progress as of last night. I’ve been working on her sleeves, as you can see. The upside down stitching is working well and my homemade frame is the perfect size as I can see the entire design area. I don’t know why I’ve kept her in her pillowcase for so long because I do enjoy stitching her.
It really is a tough decision, but I’ve told a friend I’d work on the Angel for at least three straight days, so that makes the decision a moot point right now. I do miss my serpent, though, and my Disney WIP, which I also recently picked up again.

We can really make out the Angel now
I find it fascinating seeing how we each tackle these complex designs and manage to bring it all together ( hopefully without too much )
