(edit - Sorry, I forgot to change the title from day 4 to day 5. Should be fixed now)

26 Margay

Image

The margay is found in the forests of Mexico, the Amazon Basin, Argentina, Uruguay, Belize and Brazil. The margay is right in between the Ocelot and the Oncilla in size. The margay is primarily arboral and refuses to cross open fields. It is the only cat to possess the ability to rotate its hind legs 180° , enabling it to run head first down trees like squirrels. The margay can also hang from a branch by one hind foot. They are exceedingly quick, and even during a fall they can grab hold of a branch with one front or hind paw and climb up again.

10 Serval

Image

The serval is a medium-sized species of cat that is found throughout sub-Saharan Africa. Proportionately, the serval is the cat with the longest legs and the largest ears. The serval’s sensitive hearing allows it to locate small mammals moving through the grass or underground, and to hunt its prey sometimes without seeing it until the final pounce. ears of the Serval allow them to sense the vibrations of rodents that are even underground and once detected, the Serval will dig it's prey out using it's sharp claws. The serval has one of the highest hunting success rates with a success chance of 50%, compared to domestic cats which have a 10% chance. The serval is also the wild cat ancestor of the savannah breed of cats.

23 Cougar

Image

The cougar is the largest of the "small cats" and can reach sizes comparable to the leopard. With the exception of humans, the cougar has the largest range of any terrestrial mammal in the Western Hemisphere, from northern British Columbia to Argentina. The cougar is sometimes referred to as "the cat of many names" are listed in dictionaries under more names than any other animal in the world. Some of the other names for the cougar include: mountain lion, panther, puma, painter, el leon, and catamount. The cougar is extremely agile and has great jumping power and may leap from the ground up to a height of 18 feet into a tree.

21 Jaguar

Image

The jaguar is the largest cat in the Americas and the third largest cat in the world. The jaguar makes its home in southern and central America and at one time their range was as far north as the southern United States. The jaguar's spots are unique because the spots form circles called rosettes and unlike other spotted cats the jaguar has more spots inside the rosettes. The jaguar has the strongest bite of all the cats. This enables the jaguar to kill their prey differently than other cats. Most cats kill by going for the neck while jaguars are able to pierce skulls with their strong bite.

9 Bay Cat

The bay cat, also called the Borneo bay cat is about the size of a large house cat. The bay cat is only found on the island of Borneo, an island between China and Australia. Little is known about this cat because all information has been gathered from museum specimens.

18 Flat-headed Cat

Image

The flat-headed cat is about the size of a domestic cat. This cat is found in Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, Singapore and Brunei. This cat is adapted for life in or near the water. Its paws are webbed and their teeth are sharper and backwards pointing to allow them to hold onto slippery prey like frogs and fish. The flat-headed cat is also different in that they are more omnivorous than other cats having a likeness for fruit and sweet potatoes.

19 Pallas's Cat

Image

The Pallas' Cat also known as the manul is the size of a domestic cat but appears larger because of its stocky size and incredibly dense coat of fur. This cat is found in Central Asia, from the Caspian Sea through Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and northern India to central China, Mongolia and southern Russia. The prefer the cold and arid environments of rocky steppes and grasslands at elevations up to about 15,000 feet. The Pallas cat has the longest and densest fur of any cat. They also have eyes with pupils in a round shape instead of a slit. Some consider this the cat with the most expressive face.

24 Rusty-Spotted Cat

Image

The rusty-spotted cat competes for title of the world's smallest cat with the black-footed cat and the kodkod being about half the size of a domestic cat. The rusty-spotted cat is found only in India and Sri Lanka. They are sometimes called the hummingbird of cats because of their small size, agility, and quickness.

25 Fishing Cat

Image

The fishing cat is just a little larger than a domestic cat. They are found in southeast Asia from India to Indochina and Indonesia. The fishing cat is adapted for hunting their favorite prey: fish. The fishing cat has partially webbed toes and claws that are not fully retractable. This cat also has unique fur structure. The layer of fur closest to the fur is so dense that water can't penetrate it so the cat stays warm and dry in cold waters.

Sorry for the lack of communication. The events of last Thursday mean that I've been spending a lot of time on Facebook trying to grasp the enormity of the vote. I still think I'm in a bad dream :(
Anyway, beautiful pictures of gorgeous cars and I, too am on 6!

17 Colocolo

Image

The colocolo is a small wild cat from Chile. Until recently, Pampas and Pantanal cats (one of the breeds I cut from the list) were regarded as subspecies of colocolo.

1 Cheetah

Image

The cheetah is found in parts of eastern, central and southwestern Africa and a small portion of Iran. The cheetah is the fastest land animal going from 0 to 96 km/h (60 mph) in three seconds. They are not able to sprint for very long, usually being able to maintain that speed for only 20 seconds. The cheetah uses its tail to help steer and maintain balance while changing direction while running. The cheetah is unusual for a cat because they have poor night vision. Because of this and to avoid competition from larger animals like lions, cheetahs prefer to hunt at mid day.

3 Clouded Leopard

Image

The clouded leopard is the smallest of the "big cats" family being only a medium sized cat. They are found from Nepal through Indochina, Sumatra and Borneo. They are named for their clouded coat appearance but are not closely related to the leopard. The tree climbing talents of the clouded rival that of the Margay, running down trees head-first and climbing branches horizontally with its back towards the ground, and even hangs upside down by its hind legs. They are also quite adept at swimming and readily take to water.

4 Caracal

Image

The caracal is a medium sized cat found in Africa and part of the middle-east. The name Caracal is derived from a Turkish word “karakulak” meaning “black ear.” These cats are also sometimes called the desert lynx. The Caracal was once trained for bird hunting in Iran and India. They were put into arenas containing a flock of pigeons, and wagers were made as to how many the cat would take down. This is the origination of the expression “to put a cat amongst the pigeons.” The Caracal is capable of leaping into the air and knocking down 10-12 birds at one time.

Bingo is so much fun, even when I don't win (but winning is fun, too). I will be working on some Bingo ideas and will try to post them before I go on vacation. The game won't start until mid-July at the earliest, so maybe that will give us time to get lots of players.

And just to let you all know...I've been focused on getting ready for my vacation and haven't had a chance to pick a topic for the Bingo I'll be hosting. Sorry. But I will be posting the topic and numbers when I get back, so stay tuned.

First, I am not a flake - I have't forgotten about Bingo. Now that my vacation is over :-( I am going to try to come up with something fun - or at least something. :-)

Second, I have to show off the needle minders that were part of my prize. Aren't they fabulous?? Doctor Who and patriotic - perfect for this Doctor fan/mom of two Air Force officers.
