Basically the one who wins the previous bingo, hosts the next, i.e. selects subject, words, timing, everything, AND provides a prize, generally out of their own stash to a value of US Dollars 10, more if you like.

Procedure:

Host lists say 30 words
Participant selects 10 of the words and sends private message to host with his/her list.
Host issues 2 to 3 words a day
Participant checks every day and crosses of his/her list

When you have all 10, send a private message to host. First one to do so wins.
Host checks list and confirms winner
Winner sends address to host via private message
Prize posted :D

Winner then becomes new Host Master for next game

Perhaps the moderators could jump in here to answer this.
I personally don't like the word 'old' in your question.
The idea is to offer a prize that is worthy of being called a prize.

When you say "old magazines or charts", what do you mean? Generally, the prize should be around $10 US Money or its equivalent. If someone choses to spend more that would be up to them. The prize could be something in your stash such as chart or some magazines you think the winner would like.( For example, horse charts for Dana or Niki, birds for quite a few members, snowmen for Rose etc) It could be something that is pertinent to the Bingo topic, like an animal design (or insects) if that has been the subject, or a piece of fabric or thread that you think the winner would like. A lot of times the prize is a gift certificate to an online store because you don't know what a good prize would be. A gift certificate is also a good prize if the winner isn't in the same country (I gave a gift certificate from Sew and So to a British member who won one of my Bingos) so that there isn't a big postage cost.

What do other participants think? As far as I know we have had very few issues about the prizes. I like winning because I like coming up with the next subject for the next Bingo. That is always a challenge.

I feel that the gift certificates are good prizes because we all have such varied tastes. I would say that pre-owned charts/magazines would be fine so long as the host was clear with everyone up front what exactly the prizes were. That way, only those that were actually interested in the prize would play, and nobody would end up with charts that they don't want to stitch.

We all have very different tastes, so it's usually not safe to assume that just because we're all stitchers, we will all be excited about the same charts.

I haven't participated a lot, because I don't know that I could come up with enough of the subject matter later. But I will say that I agree with this comment about as long as it was made clear in the beginning what the prize was then only people who wanted that prize would join in..

I'm confused.

If the host sees all of the participants' selected words *and* then posts the daily words, they know which participants have which words already, so there's no element of chance involved. Or am I missing something?

The numbers are picked at random. The first one I hosted, I just made little papers for each number and blindly picked two numbers each day. This time I'm going to use a random number generator. It's completely unbiased and random - definitely a game of chance.

All becomes clear! Thanks, I hadn't realised the words were numbered etc.
