Do any of you have ufo’s that you know you won’t ever finish but can’t bring yourself to get rid of them?
I have a few that I keep thinking about getting rid of but I can’t seem to bring myself to do it!

Absolutely positively. I have taken to calling them "on holds" rather than UFOs. Makes me feel better. And over the past few months when my stitchy bug has gone AWOL the difference in how I refer to them keeps me sane.

I put projects 'on hold' particularly when progress is slow I get fed up and put them away, I know I would regret it if I got rid of anything!

Yes. It's an old De La Tour pattern that I started about ...hmmm......30 years ago?

It was charted in Anchor, but I used the DMC equivalents that are anything BUT equivalents. DMC just doesn't have the range of skin-tone shades that Anchor has and the faces look horrible and I wasn't happy with the differences in the grey shades. I was not quite a quarter of the way done and just couldn't look at it anymore. The lesson I learned on that project was to stitch the design in the manufacturer's thread it was charted in.

It's still in my stash. I can't bring myself to throw it away for some reason. It's on 16-count aida, and I can't even imagine doing anything on fabric with such large stitch-count again. I can't throw it away and I don't want the fabric. I need an intervention.

I also long ago learnt my lesson on stitching in the original threads. I was stitching "Chinese Pagoda" by Jill Gordon for my friend as a gift. As I had nearly a full set of DMC threads, I used the conversion table and kitted with DMC. When I was nearly finishing, I realized I did not like what I saw. Off I went to town and bought all the Anchor threads I needed for that project (the chart is in Jill's book, hence all the fuss with threads) and started it on a new piece of fabric. You would not believe how different the picture was in Anchor!

As for parting with my UFOs, they are too large to be just binned (that's what happens to card-size disasters of stitching). So most of them sit in the bottom drawer and as the experience shows, normaly are eventually finished. But some tablecloths-to-be and unfinished tablerunners did find a good home- I gave them to my old school friend and to my sister, one went to the stitching neighbour. They were on too small (for me) Aida - I just did not feel like torturing my eyes any longer, so there was no point of keeping them.

Yes, Vanessa. I have a Lanarte kit on linen, which has a lot of very pale "wishy washy colours". I do wonder if I will ever finish it, as I have a few new more appealing kits to stitch in my stash. Still, I can't bring myself to give it away yet.

I've had my share of UFOs in the past, but I've learnt to be quite ruthless with them. If I've not worked on it for years, and I think the likelihood of my ever picking it up again is remote, I try to salvage as much of the fabric and threads as I can, and get rid of the rest.
Stitching is my hobby, and I want to enjoy it - things that become a chore are for the chop.

UFO's - None.
If I like it enough to start, I like it enough to finish. And I've only been at this lark since 2011, so haven't been doing it very long really.

I have a number of charts that are not started (none paid for), and most will probably never see the light of day.

Regards,

Richard.

I gave one away recently. It was a cut thru lighthouse and I just didn't like it. The threads, the fabric and the pattern was printed on several sheets with no overlap. :tizzy:

I also have a Gorilla done in 3 strands of blended colours on some very slub by linen. That's been lurking in the bottom of the drawer for ? 20+ years!! and another of a town scene which just got forgotten. I may get it done one day

I do. But just as others have said, I can't bring myself to toss it, so I'm considering it just "on hold" for now (or maybe forever - who knows?).

I have several UFOs. Two are HAED minis that I started as experiments in fabric type/count, floss coverage, etc. I'd like to finish them at some point but they're very low priority. Then I have a few from magazines that I just got bored of and are gathering dust in a drawer. Those will probably end up in the bin.

But to answer your question, the only one I have that might not get finished but I can't bear to throw it away is Coniferous Forest. It was a wedding present and I started it on honeymoon. It's 2 over 1 on 18 count Aida and I started doing it in columns using the Scarlet Quince parking method. The problem is that once I started doing HAEDs (when I was half way through Forest), my stitching style and preferred fabrics changed. I now stitch in rows on 22 or 28 count (18 seems HUGE to me now!) and I worry that if I continue stitching Forest with my new stitching method, the difference will show in the finished piece. And because I started it in columns, it might have those unsightly column lines anyway. I've thought about starting it again on a smaller count fabric but I could never throw away my first attempt as it brings fond memories of my honeymoon. What to do?! :?

Keep it as it is as a lovely memento of your honeymoon - it sounds as thought it needn't be completed in order to give you those happy memories!

I have two. One is a picture of a hedgehog (country companions?). It's medium-large, not one of the small designs, and he's wearing a football had and scarf etc. My mother bought it for my husband so that I could stitch it for him and I've never liked it. It's probably why I took a ten year break from stitching, just to avoid the thing. It's never going to get finished.

The other one is more recent (after the big break, rather than before) and is a Winnie the Pooh calendar. It's quite big and is gorgeous, but it's on aida and now that I stitch pretty much exclusively on lovely soft linens and evenweaves, the aida feels so harsh and stiff. I hate stitching on it but love the design. It's well over half done though so I really don't want to restart it.

I'm thinking the hedgehog needs to be binned but I really don't know what to do with Pooh.

Don't give up on your UFO's. It took me 21 YEARS  to finish Ballet by Lanarte which was my wedding present from my husband and I was able to give it to him on our 21st anniversary. :whoop:
