French Translation wanted
Greetings.
I am currently working on Garden Recipe, from The Drawn Thread http://www.drawnthread.com/chartsandkits_dt_12.html" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank (2nd photo on first line). As the finished piece is for the home of a friend in France, I would like to translate the wording if possible. In English, the pattern reads:
Wild rose and flax, the columbine, a fragrant honeysuckle vine; a touch of mint, a bit of thyme, make a garden sweet and fine.
A friend with French learned in Quebec has offered this translation:
Lin et rose sauvages, L'ancolie , Une vigne odorante de chèvrefeuille
Une touche de menthe Une branchette (ou un brin) de thym, Forme un jardin Parfumé et agréable.
I do not understand when to use or not use le, la, un, une. Why is sauvages plural but not rose? I can see that space will be a problem with the honeysuckle line, since it must fit into the heart. Is it possible for the French translation to rhyme or at least be a bit more poetic? So many unanswered questions! Can anyone help? All comments welcome and very much appreciated.
Thanks.
Linda

Re: French Translation wanted
I put that through Google translate ( I use it so often as still my French is Total Rubbish!! ) and I came up with this
La rose sauvage et le lin, la colombine, une vigne parfumée de chèvrefeuille; Une touche de menthe, un peu de thym, font un jardin doux et fin.
That gives the genders as well.
I also put your friend's translation through and it comes up with
Lin et rose sauvages, L'ancolie , Une vigne odorante de chèvrefeuille
Une touche de menthe Une branchette (ou un brin) de thym, Forme un jardin Parfumé et agréable.
That translated as:
Linen and wild rose, The columbine, A fragrant honeysuckle vine
A touch of mint A branch (or a sprig) of thyme, Forms a fragrant and pleasant garden.
It's said here that Canadian French does have slight differences from Parisien French so that might explain the differences.
Hope that helps!

Well spotted, Linda! I am French. I married an English man and moved to England when I was 19.
My Husband works on our computer ( we only have the one) and I won't be able to get back to you until tonight.
I will ponder on it and get back to you tonight.

Re: French Translation wanted
Thanks! I think the sound of the translation you found is better. The number and length of words is challenging. I will spend the weekend graphing it out to see if I can get it to work. I will let you know how it goes. I really appreciate your help.wendywombat wrote:I put that through Google translate ( I use it so often as still my French is Total Rubbish!! ) and I came up with this

Re: French Translation wanted
Here is my version:
"La rose sauvage et le lin, l'ancolie, une vigne parfumée de chèvrefeuille, un peu de menthe, un brin de thym, font un jardin agréable et doux"
You chose a very pretty design, your friend will be chuffed!
So, it would look like this:
La rose sauvage
et le lin
l'ancolie
Une vigne
parfumée de
chèvrefeuille
un peu de menthe
un brin de thym
font un jardin
agréable
et doux
Hope this helps

Re: French Translation wanted
Well, the French translation is a "no go". There is simply not enough space to accommodate the translation of the honeysuckle vine. I had just begun the stitching when I asked, sobIbam far from finished. I will add a photo of where I am when I can get to a computer, which makes the uploading so much easier.
I will add wording only at the end in case an idea comes to me. BWhile the piece will hang on the wall of a home in France, the couple are British. I was just hoping to give it that added touch. I am actually toying with the idea of it being bilingual. Not sure what I think of that idea yet. I will mull it over for a while.
Thanks for your help and interest!

Lovely stitching on the perfect colour cloth, IMO.
It is a bit of a mouthfull, isn't it!
Why don't you leave it in English. In France, we think that the English language is pretty cool

Another idea to consider:
La rose sauvage
et le lin
the columbine
a fragrant honeysuckle vine
un peu de menthe
un brin de thym
make a garden sweet and fine
What do you think?

I am seriously thinking about this or something very close. I will add wording last, so I have time to think about it.poppy wrote: Another idea to consider:

What would you think about a bilingual piece hanging in your house? I don't think I would mind.

I would, personally, like it. When looking at it, people would admire the stitching at first. Then, reading it, they would pay more attention because it is different.Linda Rose wrote:What would you think about a bilingual piece hanging in your house?
