needlepoint canvas vs. cross stitch fabric

Post by isaacson72 »

I've just seen something called bargello online, and want to give it a whirl. I've done needlepoint projects before but I've never bought just blank canvas. Is the count similar to cross-stitch fabric? Does 14-count canvas equal 14-ct aida? Can I just use aida instead, do you think?

Thanks!
Michelle

Bargello or Florentine stitch can be worked on canvas or on cross stitch fabric. It's quick.easy and very effective. My first experience with it was over sixty years ago and I stitched on hessian(burlap) with wool!!

As for counts, yes, size-wise 14ct anything is the same (although canvas will look quite different from aida of the same count, just as 18ct aida looks different from 18ct evenweave)

14ct anything will be the same... provided it isn't metric. Then it will be 14 threads per centimetre (36ct in inches). Shouldn't have a worry unless you're buying from continental Europe.

Good point Richard! As I started my stitching career buying fabrics marked /cm I should have thought of that :-)

Excellent, thank you for all the responses! I think for now, while I'm still just playing around with different stuff, I'll use the extra aida stash I've got. Ever since I discovered evenweave/linen, I'm not a big fan of aida. If I decide I really like this type of stitching, I can get some more "official" needlepoint fabric.

Thanks!!
