2017 Stash & Grab

Post by Serinde »

Of course! New Year's celebrations are never complete without fireworks, Mabel! Even fired the cannon (ok, it's a very small cannon, and, yes, we have a licence) across the loch. :D :D

We brought some fireworks home from The Netherlands when we were there last New Year's Eve, so set some off in Mum's memory - she lived six floors up with a wall that was practically completely window overlooking the town, and the Dutch do tend to go mad firework-wise on New Year's Eve, so she always said she had a great show put on without having to do anything for it :-)

That was lovely to do that in memory of your mother Mabel.

Called in here for a drop of :wine: & to see if anyone else was here for a belated :toast: for the New Year. Hope everyone has a good healthy 2017 with lots of stash to keep us busy :)

Always fun to stop in here for :toast: and :cake: . Especially chocolate since its the only place I can have chocolate (actually some hot chocolate beats the :wine: for me) without getting an allergic reaction! Lots and lots of fireworks around here. Official displays as well as individual neighbors. I stayed home, stitched and started a binge marathon of watching David Suchet's Hercule Poirot mysteries on Netflix. So far I am in Season 5 (Have a lot more to go. I've seen them all at least twice but it's been a long time so some are almost like new).

Wondering if you could explain what the "stash and grab" topic is all about? :?

Ah yes, it does take a bit of explaining :-). The Stash & Grab is the Forum's virtual pub/café, where all your favourite drinks and snacks are available and where nothing has calories or hangover-inducing qualities. It's where we come for a chat and a drinkie and nibbles whenever we feel like it.

It's got a roaring fire if you like that sort of thing, and rooms with plenty of light for stitching, and comfy chairs, and everything you could possibly want. So pull up a chair, and what can I get you?

Come to think of it, what does the Grab bit in the name stand for :thinks: :thinks: :thinks: ? The Stash bit is self-explanatory of course. I seem to remember we had a bit of a poll/vote on the pub name and this came out on top, but as I say I can't remember the reason for the Grab bit - grab a drink/bite to eat?

The Stash & Grab -– and I don't remember exactly how it got that name, but I'm inclined to blame it on the wonderful MrXStitch (aka Jamie Chalmers -- go look him up for an eye-opening view of needle and thread) -- is our Virtual Pub. A meeting place, if you like, after a hard day's work, or when a convivial atmosphere is called for, like the recent New Year celebrations. Anything you fancy to eat and drink can be found here. The bartender is always cordial, and the atmosphere welcoming. I am reliably informed that the Stash & Grab mixes the best hot chocolate in the entire world. :tea: The wine's not so bad either. :wine:

That revolving door you see over there? It connects with our virtual hospital, St Cross Stitchers. (And why not?) The sliding French doors behind you? Out to our treehouse by the loch via the patio and garden. Around the other corner is the pool table (or snooker, if you prefer) and the ball pool, which was a special request some years ago. Board games are in the cupboard. :D

I am so glad some one asked that question. I was wondering too what this was all about. I would like a banana banshee please :wine: . I have not had one in over 30 years. And I remember them fondly. :cloud9:
Thank you
Angie

Can I have a little pick-me-up? I've got a cold and I'm getting used to new glasses, and that combination makes me a trifle unsteady!

Have come in for a cup of tea & hot buttered toast as I feel I would like a while in a quiet place. Several people I know are ill & I can't hep them other than hoping they get better soon but of course can't stop thinking about them as you do.

DB's wife still waiting for hospital appointment as she has had permanent headache 3 months. Had tests few days before Christmas & we're all hoping she gets to see specialist soon.

3 friends have been sick over Xmas & New Year. One has kidney stone & waiting to have it taken out. Other friend has pneumonia but yesterday learned she has turned a corner now & on the mend. Phew, glad about that. Another one had migraine for several days worrying about her sick husband. Then to top it all our neighbours got home on Wednesday after the 2 weeks holidays which they spent in a their small holiday cottage & the wife had bronchitis!

Sorry this is not a happy posting. Just need a wee while to relax & unwind. Thank goodness I can switch off at night & do my stitching. Takes my mind off everything other than the project I am on.

Off now - enjoyed the tea & toast thank you. Lovely crunchy toast just nicely browned & creamy butter in here. Is there a cleaner as I may have dropped some crumbs on the floor?

The floors are self-cleaning Izzi - and this is just the place to come when you need a listening ear (as well as buttered toast - or even crumpets!)

Izzi, I'm so sorry that your friends have been ill. I hope they start feeling better very soon.

If you don't mind, I'll bring my coffee and ginormous brownie and commiserate with you. 2017 hasn't been off to a great start for me either. One of our guinea pigs passed away unexpectedly on Monday. While we were still reeling from that, today we found out the one who had surgery to remove a bladder stone in October has already formed a new one, which is really not good. I'm feeling so gutted by it all I can't even focus on stitching right now.

Mabel, I'm intrigued by this self-cleaning floor. I'm envisioning a magic broom like in the Sorcerer's Apprentice :)

I have no idea. The cleaning just... happens. Except following big parties like Hogmanay, when I usually tidy up and restock. Even virtual workers deserve time in lieu. 8)

Anyone who wants to do a spot of therapeutic cleaning and tidying is of course always welcome - the self-cleaning floor doesn't feel threatened by it :-)

Cavymom, I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your guine pig, and the other not doing as well as you had hoped. They are such lovely creatures, and I still miss the two I had to give up when I moved to England (they fortunately found a loving home in a school, taken home every weekend by the head mistress who had an enormous guinea pig run in her garden).

Nice to see you in here Cavy Mom but so sorry to hear about your g. pigs. They are cute little things & so 'chatty'. Always so sad then pets die or are ill.

One thing about self cleaning floor no one can slip on spilled drink so saves fractured/broken bones  Kind of you to tidy up Serinde. You do a lot between St. Cross Stitchers & here. One busy lady with your stitching as well. :)

Cavy Mom, I am so sorry to hear about your guinea pigs. The loss of a loved pet is so hard. And an ill pet is also heart wrenching. Twice a week I have to take Laverne to the vet for subcutaneous fluid treatments to prevent dehydration. To say that she hates it is an understatement. Fortunately, I have an awesome vet who has worked out to make these as unstressful as possible and yesterday I think we hit the right combination and it was the first treatment that went easily and quietly. The goal is to eventually do these at home. But there is no way to explain to her why this is happening. I hope that your vet will find something that can help your little furbaby. In the meantime know that you will get all the comfort and support we can provide.

Thank you everyone for your kind words! I'm feeling much better today and have realized we just have to take it day by day and not get too far ahead of ourselves. It was just the one-two punch of things happening back to back that had me so down. Our two vets, who are both excellent, are currently consulting to decide what they think the best course of action might be.

Mabel, it's always nice to hear from someone who has had pet guinea pigs. I had no idea they were going to be so full of personality. I'm sorry you had to give yours up but it sounds like they did find a lovely home. And Izzi, you are right, they are very chatty, except around mealtime when they become downright demanding.

Carole, I'm so glad you seem have found the ideal balance for Laverne. It really helps when you've found a great vet and know your pet is in the best hands :) Both vets we've been working with have been so compassionate and caring with both the animals and us humans, and I appreciate that more than I could ever properly express to them.

I'll be here for a bit doing some therapeutic virtual cleaning to avoid dreaded real world chores.

Glad you are feeling better Cavymom.

Carole, I hope Laverne responds to the treatment, It must be hard for you each week when you go to the vets even though you know it has to be done. Laverne is an unusual name, not heard it before. :)
