Scattered french knots

Post by sina28 »

Hello everyone, I have a question.
I just finished my Toy Shoppe by Dimensions and it has lots of french knots all scattered around the whole piece. For now, I just went from knot to knot, making my back look really messy. How would everyone attempt something like this?
I have more, and also bigger, Dimensions kits and lots of them have these kinds of scattered french knots.
In my opinion, starting and finishing a new thread for each knot wouldn't really make sense, but the way I did it now makes it look so messy!
I appreciate any kind of help.

I'm not the best at french knots and the scattered ones can be tricky. For me it all depends on whether or not the strands between the knots can be seen through the front of the fabric. If the knots are relatively close I don't stitch each one seperately but will do a group at a time. If the knots are far apart I will stitch each one alone. Far apart for me can vary a lot depending on my mood and how many knots there are. Anywhere between an inch or two, unless I have some stitched areas I can weave the thread through. Not much help I know, but I do remember struggling with that when I have stitched designs with lots of those knots.

I'm similar to Carole with this one. If they are not too far apart I would do them all in a oner but if a couple of inches apart I would probably do singly

I did Fr. knots on Pleasant Row Cottages & those were on top of stitching - I did those in one go in each area. They do not detract from the picture. If you look at Pleasant Row Cottage finish on Stitch-a-long on here, you will see framed picture. Just to prove a point it does not detract, a friend of mine wanted to buy the finished item as she liked it so much.

I'm not one that fusses too much about what the back looks like, but if it really bothers you, this is what I do when I have those French knots that seem to be sitting in the middle of nowhere. I go under 5 or 6 stitches towards where the knot is to be placed and make a loop around the last stitch, make the knot on the front side, go back to the back, put another loop around the closest stitch where I finished the knot and then go under another 5 or 6 stitches. That seems to hold them in pretty tightly. (I'm not sure how well I explained that, maybe someone else will know what I'm talking about and give a better description.)

Another thing you could consider is replacing the French knots with seed beads as they can be easily added as you go.

Happy Stitching!
