Bookmarks (this one is a pre-finished bookmark)
Image

Binder Books ( you can also make photo albums or decorate school binders or binders for work) For these I chose the binder that has the pocket on the front but I think you could also find a way to decorate the non-pocketed type.
Image Image

Calender ( This is just one option I used to make a calendar) I stitched 3 months per cloth, Then I covered the back with felt, I used cloth binding to finish the edges. I then used metal grommets to punch holes in the top of the cloth. I then attached the fabric to a clip board I bought and covered with a pretty cloth.
Image

Trivet/Hot Plate You can buy these online or at most stitching stores then just add your work and secure the backing. They make great useful gifts.

Like many of you I enjoy cross stitching bookmarks. They are quick, portable projects and always appreciated by those who are fortunate enough to receive one. My favorite finishing technique is to cross stitch my own purchased lace onto the bookmark. This allows me to choose the finished size of the bookmark as well as draw out a particular color of my choice in the pattern. It is also much less expensive than prefinished bookmarks, which are becoming more difficult to find.

The lace needed to complete a bookmark is generally a narrow width - 3/4" to 1" works best - that has a ladder edging that allows for attaching to the bookmark with cross stitches. Turn the lace on itself and and change its direction when you come to a corner. Although my picture does not show much variety, you can use whatever color of lace you like and attach with a variety of stitching patterns. An embellishment of ribbons etc can be added if desired where the lace begins and ends. In the samples below I have simply folded the lace over for the last few stitches for a flat finish.

The technique is not at all difficult and adds only about 45 minutes of finishing time.

For those of you -- like me -- who need a helping... or is that a holding? ... hand when it comes to finishing, Mary Corbett over at Needle 'n Thread has just published an e-book, Lavender Honey & Other LIttle Things. It looks wonderful, and isn't just for free-style or surface embroiderers. I'm sure all her finishing techniques are applicable to cross stitching projects of a similar nature. Check it out: http://www.needlenthread.com/2013/07/la ... more-22831" target="_blank
