Hi from a newbie

Post by Smurf85 »

Just wanted to say hello as I'm new to the forum and using forums in general :?

I'm from the uk and started stitching a few years ago. I've completed a few small projects and for the last year started on my first HAED will post a pic when I find out how. I have 2 children which take up most of my time so some weeks only manage to get a few hours stitching in!

Welcome from the West of Scotland! Glad you found us, and I hope you discover that this isn't a difficult place to find your way around in. And if you're lost, you can always go into the Stash & Grab, our virtual pub, and enjoy whatever it is you fancy without fear of calories or hangovers. Perfect! :P

Your stitching is beautiful! Set up a thread in the Stitch-A-Long section, so we can follow its progress.

I thought I'd share some of my completed projects

This was my first project I finished which was for my sister-in-law when she moved

This was for my daughter

This was for my gran and one of my favourites, she loves it and doesn't stop talking about it

And finally

This is what my HAED will look like (hopefully) when I've finished. I'm going to start a SAL when I have completed page 22 of 77. I'm halfway through page 19 and it's mostly black left to do  until I finished page 22

Love the Kingfisher, and the HaED.. Wow!

I am so glad I didn't know about HaED before I started stitching, otherwise I suspect my first project would have been similar to your HaED. I suspect it would have put me off for life!

Richard

I too love the kingfisher, I did one some years ago but that was a tapestry. I can probably claim to be the oldest stitcher on the site (if I'm not then someone will correct me. I am in my 84th year now).

A very good welcome to you by the way.

Thank you everyone for replying!!

Quick question

I taught myself how to cross stitch and have just realised I stitch wrong  so instead of starting my stitch at the bottom corner I start at the top  does it matter or am I going to have to change the way I stitch? Obviously I know I can't change the direction of my stitches on my WIP or it will look weird

The only 'wrong way to stitch a cross' is one that you don't like doing. When it comes down to it, the only difference when finished is in the sheen on the cotton floss.

Just do it the way you like.

As long as the top stitches are in the same direction (unless the chart calls for something different) it doesn't matter. One of the wonderful things about Cross Stitching is that there aren't really any rules and if there are some that I don't know about, I'm probably breaking them and that doesn't matter to me either. And from what I can see of your work, you are doing way more than okay.

I too love the kingfisger and your HaED looks stunning. :D

As others have said it really doesn't matter which way your top thread lies so long as they all lie the same way. As for where you start your stitch I fing it varies depending on which direction I'm stitching. If working downwards I start at the bottom but if going upwards I start at the top without really thinking about it. Read somewhere that it's supposed to help on densely packed areas to bring the needle up on the empty space and go down ( where you have more control ) in the fuller hole.

Looking forward to seeing your SAL when you atart it. There's realy no ned to wait for more pages to be completed. Just launch in where you're at. :D
