free cross stitch pat generator info

Post by annastasia76 »

I used to use pic to pat to generate my crochet picture afghan patterns, it was perfect when it came to the screen where you would select which one you want (with the # of colors/quality) it had the lines on it then I would copy from there and not click on it showing the symbols. It has since changed and no longer shows the lines on it making it impossible for me to use the way I need it. Does anybody know of another free tool I can use to generate my patterns giving me the same quality as pic to pat but with the lines?? I've tried a few others and the quality is just not there

this is the image I want turned into a pattern

with pic to pat I used to select the lowest number of colors while still showing a clear image then I would put it into photoshop and edit it further to have only the #of color I wanted (example 1 color of red rather than 4 or 5)

by the way I use it for personal use or free pattern use only, I do not sell any patterns generated from a free pattern generator, in this case it's for a christmas gift.

thank you in advance

Richard has a free program, (http://www.chestnutpens.co.uk/downloads/crossstitch.zip" target="_blank) but I think it's probably way more complex than what you're looking for. There is a free open-source program. I haven't tried it, but free is free:

If all you want is the grid lines on the image, can you print cross-stitch grids onto transparency material and overlay the image?

Or you could print the grid on regular paper and use a lightbox

Or you can use a graphics program to overlay the grid on the image and then print it.

In addition to my program that Allyn has already mentioned, there is the somewhat simpler program I started off with, 'Ryijy Stitch Designer' available for free here: https://code.google.com/p/ryijy/. If you need help, the programmer Jari Haurito is usually very helpful, and then seems to become unavailable for a while. Not quite sure why, maybe his job takes him out of easy contact. Nonetheless his program is good, but there are limitations. It was the limitations in his program that started me writing my one..

I did use CStitch 0.9.3, and found it a terribly frustrating experience. It may be better now, but at that issue status it used 4 pixels to create 1 stitch (2x2 grid) and there was no dithering or blending to get rid of unwanted contours. I was also very unconvinced of the colour selection routine's selections.

Regards,

Richard.
