Sharing charts to which we have the copyright

Post by Mabel Figworthy »

I'm starting this thread so that members of the forum can post charts which they are willing to share and TO WHICH THEY OWN THE COPYRIGHT. Presumably this will usually mean anything you have designed yourself, is that right Rose?

As several members design, we should be able to build up quite a nice library. Even if a design was conceived for a particular occasion, e.g. an anniversary sampler, you may still wish to share it for people to use with different names and dates.

So how do you go about posting in this thread?

1. Find out whether you hold the copyright to the design.
I cannot stress this too much! If you designed something from scratch you should be fine, but if you have any doubts (for example because you designed a sampler using existing designs from books or mags) please first post a message explaining the situation, and together we should be able to work out whether it is suitable for posting.

2. Turn your chart into a format that is accessible to everyone.
If you post your chart in the format of whichever stitch computer program you use, many members may not be able to use it. It's probably best to turn your chart into one or more image files such as JPGs and post them as pictures.

3. Give your posting an informative name.
Please don't call it 'new chart' or something like that -- if it's a chart of a goldfish in a bowl, call it Goldfish In A Bowl. Dull, I know :-), but a lot more use when trying to find something specific.

4. Add a colour key.
If you use floss numbers in your colour key, don't forget to say whether they're DMC or Anchor or any other type of thread. Of course it's also possible to use colour names such a Light Red and leave it to the user to choose their favourite brand.

5. If you wish, state limitations to use.
Perhaps you're happy for people to use your design as it is, but not for them to start changing colours or adapting the design. Perhaps you're happy for them to change whatever they like, but not for people to start kitting up your design and selling it.

There, I think that's probably all :-)
I'll post a couple of my own charts later today to get the ball rolling. Enjoy!

Clown

Post by Mabel Figworthy »

This is a design for a clown; it can be personalised by changing the letter on his shirt (it was originally designed for a friend's little boy whose name was Pedraig). The original piece was actually turned into a toy by adding a backing and then stuffing it, but unfortunately I didn't take a picture of it.

The colour key is in DMC stranded cotton:
white
yellow 444
orange 947
red 347
pink 899
blue 334
mauve 208
green 562
dark grey 317

The permissions bit:
This design is copyright to I J M Cochrane.
You may use, copy and/or share this design, and you may change it to your liking for your own use. You may not sell this design in any form or use it to make up kits.
You may sell the finished piece for charity, but you may not sell it commercially.

PM me for a larger chart.

Here is the crocodile I made today...

Image

Colours: 3 shades of green:
DMC 367 pistachio green dk
DMC 164 forest green lt
DMC 319 pistachio green vdk
DMC 3778 terra cotta lt for the mouth
white for teeth, black for backstitch

The backstitch around the little spots should be rounded, as I drew the one above the front leg, but I just lost patience drawing them... sorry.

Tree in variegated threads

Post by Mabel Figworthy »

I designed this specifically with the variegated threads in mind which I happened to have (and which had no numbers when I was given them), but you can use various shades of ordinary stranded cotton as well, and beads for the blossom clusters if you prefer.

Another quick 'un before I retire for the evening. As previously, copyright: M L Barnes. I am happy for this pattern to be used as designed, however, please do not sell the pattern for financial gain or make up into a kit in any form. I am happy for any final product made to be sold for financial gain - if you need a bit of inspiration, how about stitching in the wedding colours :?: :?:

Colours used:

DMC: 783 - medium topaz; 7857 - dark rosewood; 223 - light shell pink; 224 - very light shell pink; 3713 - very light salmon

And the alphabet is here. I am happy for the alphabet to be used free of any copyright restrictions.

PS. I am unsure why but the picture of the pattern is not loading correctly. It is correct on screen on my PC as I look at it, however, row 1 of the vows looks incorrect on here. Between "and" and "to" of row 1 of the vows, there should be an additional two spaces (as in the proceeding rows).

Here is the glider I designed for my FIL's birthday card. It uses only 4 colours, white, light grey and light blue (with blending filament to imitate the sparkle of the glass) plus dark grey for the back stitch. I stitched it on hand-dyed dark-blue splotchy fabric, but it would look good on vintage blue as well!

My first attempt at designing a blackwork biscornu on a cross stitch programme. The centre is purposely left sparse fo that little of the design is covered by the central button.
