My main stash of threads are kept on card numbered order. But using threads on a project I found the thread organiser purchased from Sew it All a real boon! Apart from different coloured organisers for different projects there is a thread cutter at the top which is great especially when travelling!!

If you are stitching with two strands another idea is you use one strand from each dye so they are slightly muted. The effect is often nicer than just a plain flat colour.
