Re: Dimensions Gold Scarlet Wizard

Have you considered light weight fishing line? You can get 4lb or 6lb line and it will work just as well as the Sulky. It's going to look beautiful, btw.

Re: Boo Hoo sniff sniff

The US tax system is a dumpster fire, that's for sure! There is no minimum threshold for sales taxes, you buy a $1.00 candy bar, you pay the sales tax accordingly. The accounting industry here does very well, a good CPA generally makes six figures. Each state has it's own Department of Taxation and ...

Re: Boo Hoo sniff sniff

Hello Richard! You make a good point. I wasn't really talking about the manufacturing process per say - merely the costs of complying with all the different sales/trade regulations. I think all DMC floss is still manufactured in France, and as all of our shades change when environmental regulations ...

Re: Boo Hoo sniff sniff

Hello all, I haven't posted in ages but have been lurking. I'm not sure DMC is wholly to blame for the different sales regions. I thought the higher prices in Europe were a result of compliance with EU 1007/2011? If Australia has implemented sales restrictions as well to protect local jobs, is it po...

How do you tell if a product is licensed?

Hello all, it's been a while since I've posted. I have a question that I'm not really sure there is an answer to. Is there any way to tell if a chart is actually licensed? I mean, it's usually quite obvious that the Disney chart on Etsy for $5 is not. And I am fairly certain that HAED, Scarlett Quin...

MCG Textiles

Does anyone know how/why MCG Textiles went out of business? Not that I'm sad, their fabric was useless, but I thought MCG was owned by the same guy who owns Hobby Lobby. Is there a story here somewhere?

Re: Tips for stitching on evenweave

I just recently started a project on evenweave for the same reason. The kit came with 14 ct, but this one is special and I wanted the image to really pop. I hadn't stitched on anything smaller than 18 ct in a very long time. Here's what I'm currently encountering: 1.) My eyes are CRAP. I need readin...

Re: advice needed for dark fabric

Try a white towel or pillowcase on your lap first. If that doesn't work, you could use a wafer light. Search for light box/art box/wafer light and look for one that will not generate heat. Good luck!

Re: Basting Questions

Without seeing your actual project, here's how I think I would tackle it: 1.). I would use a light weight muslin to line the stocking. Sew the muslin to the wrong side of your fabric, 1/8" from the outside edge of your piece, well outside of your actual sewing line. If you are using felt, you d...

Re: Basting Questions

There might be an advantage to doing a "stocking within a stocking" liner if your seams are going to be particularly thick when you layer the stocking together. You'd have to be particularly careful with the seam around the stocking's opening so that it will be even when you tuck it in. Wh...

Love the Latte! Wish I was as industrious as you appear to be on your cat lady start. If you have a Frodo and a Rosie, is it safe to assume the third's name is Sam?

Re: Needle storage

DMC makes a fan shaped, purple needle case with 5 or 6 compartments in it. I wrote a needle size on a slip of paper and taped it inside the compartment slot so I could easily see the size I needed. To determine the needle size, I downloaded a sizing chart from the internet (do a search, I can't reme...

Re: Eye Strain

How aggravating! I am an avid reader as well as quilter and stitcher. I have found that I have to use much stronger reading glasses for quilting and stitching than I do to read. I use +1.75 or so to read with no eye strain at all, but need at least +2.50 or +3.00 to quilt or cross stitch. I have eno...

Re: Cross stitched afghan-advice needed

The afghan looks GREAT! :whoop: You can absolutely machine wash and dry it when it's finished. I would run a zig zag on the outer edge of the afghan to keep it from fraying. Run both the backing you are going to use and the afghan through a gentle cycle wash and dry to make sure both are pre-shrunk....

Re: Half cross stitch?

Ooooohhhh, a tough one. I usually do that kind of marking one of two ways depending on which I think would look better within the design. Usually I do a 3/4 stitch in the larger half of the square and a 1/4 stitch in the smaller half, that way I have more coverage underneath the backstitch. If I thi...

Re: Making a pattern using graph paper

I have also just sketched what I wanted to do directly onto graph paper. Another way that I've used is to copy the graph paper onto overhead projector sheets (clear plastic sheets that can be purchased at any office supply place) and put it over whatever image I want to do. When I am copying the gra...

Re: Floss storage in drawers???

I keep all of my floss in a hanging file box. If your drawers are deep enough, you could buy one of the metal frames they make to hang files from and use my method. I took hanging file folders and cut the folder part off about 3" down from the top (leaving you with two hanging pieces.). I then ...
